HOW TO CREATE A
Before the hurricane season, it’s always a good idea to create a plan so that you and your family know exactly what to do in case of an emergency. If you own a business, you should plan for your company as well.
Develop a Family Disaster Plan
Developing and understanding a plan of action for a range of possible situations can ensure that family members are prepared. This is called a Family Disaster Plan or Family Emergency Plan. The success of this plan relies very much on each family member knowing what to do and working together to accomplish the tasks.
Develop a Business Disaster Plan
Your business is a valuable asset and like your home, you need to ensure that it is adequately prepared for a disaster. Be sure to create a disaster preparedness plan for your company. Identify employees/managers who are responsible for ensuring various checks are made.
What you will need to create your disaster plan:
- All family/household members
- Disaster Preparedness Template
INS AND OUTS OF
Disaster Supply Kits
Plan for Your Family
Disaster Supply Kits provide your family with basic essentials for survival during an emergency situation and often after a disaster such as a hurricane. A kit should contain everything that you will need to survive for a reasonable length of time without aid.
Ensure Your Business is Prepared
If you own a business, you should gather items in one location at your place of business in the event that a storm hits while you are on premises. This will protect the safety of your employees should disaster strike during regular working hours and without ample notice.
WHAT SHOULD I DO…?
To ensure that you, your home, your family and your business make it through the hurricane season as comfortably as possible, our guide includes advice on what you should do:
- If you want to stay at home
- If you want to go to a shelter

CHECK YOUR SURVIVAL KIT
Go through the checklists and ensure that you have all of your emergency supplies. Keep the contents together in labelled watertight containers. Stock up on extras of everything. If you have a fire extinguisher, have it checked and refilled.
FILL UP YOUR VEHICLE
Fuel up your vehicle i.e. car, truck, motorcycle. While at the gas station, check the air pressure in your tyres and any other fluids.
Charge all rechargeable batteries on items such as radios, mobile phones, flashlights, cameras, and cordless screwdrivers.
VISIT THE BANK
Get extra cash. Remember banks’ ATM’s and in-store card terminals will not function during a power outage.
Turn the setting dial in your freezer and refrigerator to the coldest settings and open only when necessary. If electricity goes out, the coldness in the refrigerator helps to reduce the instance of food spoilage.

Before the Disaster:
Have an Insurance Coverage Check up (Home and Business)
Check your coverage to ensure you are fully covered against all perils that you may be exposed to.
Fire insurance will not protect you against damage caused by a hurricane or flood. Your sum insured, which is the value of your insurance coverage should be equal to your reinstatement value (the cost to fully rebuild or replace your home and its contents).
If you own a business, check your insurance coverage to ensure that your sum insured is adequate and up-to-date for all insurable items, including business interruption cover and loss of rent.
